Detailed Itinerary
Morning time
After being picked up from our hotel, the city trip begins with a stop at Ba Dinh Square, which has a Soviet-style architecture and is where Ho Chi Minh read aloud the Declaration of the Nation’s Independence in 1945. Before entering Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, we tour the museum devoted to him while being led by soldiers dressed in full ceremonial garb. As we depart, we will be able to stroll through the Presidential Palace’s gardens before arriving at “Uncle Ho’s” house, the modest residence he constructed (on the model of a traditional Vietnamese stilt house) and where he spent the final ten years of his life.
The main Vietnamese Confucian sanctuary and its historical centre of study, the 900-year-old Temple of Literature, will be our next stop after that. This is one of the few remains of the ancient city and is made up of five courtyards.
Lunch will be served at a classy neighbourhood eatery in Hanoi.
Afternoon time
We go to the Hoa Lo prison, which served as Indochina’s maximum security jail during the French colonial period. It was the location where the colonialists imprisoned the Vietnamese patriot soldiers and later became known to American pilots as “Hanoi Hilton” during the American War. After that, we visit either the History Museum, the Museum of Ethnology, or the Women’s Museum in Hanoi.
After that, we’ll watch a water puppet display, a traditional North Vietnamese art form with more than a thousand-year history. Our final activity of the day is a rickshaw (cyclo) tour of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, where each street is named for a trade (or guild) that has existed there for centuries, such as Hang Bac (Silver Street) and Hang Trong (Drum Street). The mood is lively and social as business flows out onto the street and mingles with the herbal smells for sale.
